João Pessoa - PB

Third oldest city in Brazil, João Pessoa is celebrating 414 years of foundation. In addition to the eastern most point of the Americas - the Ponta do Seixas - João Pessoa is recognized by the United Nations (UN) as the second most green city in the world, behind only in Paris, France.

At the beginning of the sixteenth century, the French occupied the northeastern region and gained the confidence of Indians Potiguares. This approach hampered the Portuguese colonization. In 1585, the Portuguese João Tavares built at the mouth of the river Paraíba the Fort of São Filipe, to defend the area of French attacks.

Was born, then, the city of Our Lady of Snow. Peace with the Indians, however, was only consolidated in 1599, after the destruction of entire villages and a smallpox epidemic, which destroyed two thirds of the native population.

The history of the city is marked by conflicts between Indians and settlers. Because of these conflicts and political quarrels, of 05 August 1585 until 04 September 1930, the capital of Paraiba received five names. In the beginning, was called Nossa Senhora das Neves. In the same year he became a Felipe de Nossa Senhora das Neves (in honor of Bishop Philip II, king of Spain, when Portugal began to be dominated by the Spanish government).

In 1634, during the Dutch invasion, gained the name of Frederica, because the Dutch king Frederick Henry, Prince Orange. When the Portuguese reouveram the territory, the city has become Parahyba. The last change, pursuant to State Law, happened 69 years ago, after the assassination of the President of the State, João Pessoa, match of the Revolution of 1930.
The first buildings included buildings of urban customs, the port warehouses, commercial houses located in Varadouro, in the lower part of the city, and residences, religious and administrative buildings at the high.

Until 1910, the Lake of the current Solon de Lucena Park did not allow the growth of the city toward the coast. After she was grounded, the city could grow in that direction, and in 1940, the avenue was built Epitácio Person, linking the center to the beach. It opens the door to a new phase of development pessoense. From the 1960s, the expansion of the area was built. Today, John Person follows the course of architectural verticalisation ordered.

The capital of Paraiba is one of the oldest in the Northeast of Brazil João Pessoa, throughout its 400 years, knew very well save its historic treasures.

Baroque in the Park - one of the largest in Brazil - the slopes and the old colonial houses have a little history of this delightful city, which enchants the visitors with some of the most beautiful beaches of the Brazilian coast. In contrast to secular architectural riches, there esdificações the modern and sophisticated, with that air of João Pessoa city business.
